Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Myopia Treatment from Our Optometrists in Indianapolis and Fishers, IN

Nearly 30 percent of Americans suffer from myopia, commonly called nearsightedness. Patients who are adults or children all have the same thing in common. They have trouble seeing objects at a distance. Our optometrists can recommend several treatment options to patients who visit our Progressive Eyecare & Eyewear practice at either our Indianapolis or Fishers location.

.

Understanding Myopia

Patients with myopia have a much easier time seeing clearly when an object is close to them instead of at a distance. The cause of nearsightedness is either an eyeball that has become too long or a cornea with too much curvature, according to our eye doctors. Either of these issues causes images to fall short of the retina instead of on it and results in blurred vision.

Although experts have identified no specific cause of this disorder, many sufferers who are children have a genetic link. Because the course of nearsightedness advancement sometimes varies according to how the individual uses his or her eyes, it is important to learn the patient’s habits when it comes to reading, using a computer, or performing other types of visually intensive work.

The most common point at which nearsightedness appears is during the years a child is in school. It typically worsens until the individual is about 20 years old. We sometimes diagnose myopia developed in connection with another health disorder such as diabetes among patients who have reached their senior years.

In some cases, adults who undergo visual stress develop this condition. Fortunately, as this disorder has become more common, the number of treatment options has also increased.

Treatment Options

Our eye doctors diagnose nearsightedness after performing a comprehensive eye exam that measures how eyes team and focus light. Optometric options to treat the disorder include:

  • Eyeglasses
  • Contact lenses
  • Vision therapy
  • Ortho-k

Our practice also provides referrals for patients who would benefit from other alternatives to correct their vision. We are happy to provide both pre-and post-operative care for individuals who choose to undergo laser procedures such as LASIK and PRK or to have vision surgery.
