Types of Eye Diseases

Many eye diseases may be minor at first but can lead to serious eye-related issues if left untreated. Regardless of the severity of the disease, it is imperative to have it checked, diagnosed, and treated by an optometrist to ensure the condition does not harm your vision. Common types of eye diseases we often see at our clinics include:

Glaucoma

Eyes are light and require a balanced amount of pressure inside the eye. However, too much pressure can cause damage to the optic nerve. This condition is referred to as glaucoma. Most glaucoma patients do not have any symptoms in the early stages. However, the condition can be easily diagnosed during a routine eye exam. Common causes of glaucoma include eye injuries, blocked blood vessels, and inflammatory disorders in the eye. Treatment includes prescription eye drops or surgery.

Cataracts

The lens inside your eyes gradually becomes cloudy as you age, causing blurry vision that worsens over time. Cataract surgery restores clear vision once the cloudiness is removed from the lens.

Uveitis

Uveitis is a group of diseases responsible for causing inflammation of the uvea, the eye's middle layer containing most of the blood vessels. These diseases can cause eye tissue damage and, if not treated by an optometrist, could lead to vision loss.

Retinal Disorders

Retinal disorders can damage the thin lining at the back of the eye and block the eye's ability to collect images and pass them along to the brain. These disorders are commonly caused by age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis, also referred to as pink eye, occurs when the tissue lining the back of the eyelids is inflamed. This inflammation can cause tearing, discharge, itching, burning, redness, and the sensation that something is in the eye. Everything from scratches to irritants can cause pink eye to develop.

Corneal Diseases

Corneal diseases develop when the clear, dome-shaped window at the front of the eye becomes infected or injured. Signs of corneal diseases include redness, watery eyes, pain, and reduced vision clarity.
