Computer Vision Syndrome

Reducing Computers Vision Strain

It’s no wonder that many people are experiencing digital eye strain with the amount of time we're spending looking at computer screens, digital devices, or phones. All of this time is leading to what optometry experts at Progressive Eyecare & Eyewear in Indianapolis, IN, and Fishers, IN, refer to as computer vision. There are ways to help reduce these symptoms, though, without ditching your devices or avoiding work you need to do.

Computer Vision Syndrome

Symptoms

Here are some symptoms of digital eye strain:

  • Blurred vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Eye discomfort and fatigue
  • Eye twitching
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Red eyes

Follow these steps to help reduce or relieve your symptoms:

Have an Eye Exam

Routine eye care examinations help reduce or prevent eye strain, including computer vision issues. For those who haven't had an eye examination for more than one year, the recommendation is to schedule one immediately. During the exam, your eye doctor should hear about how often you're using your computer and other digital devices. These optometry visits are an excellent opportunity to receive the comfort and specialty services you need.

Proper Lighting

If you're working in an environment full of harsh light, either from interior lights or bright sunlight through the windows, then this could cause eye strain. During computer use, ambient lighting should be approximately half as bright as your office's environment. Close blinds, drapes, or shades to eliminate exterior lights. Use low light or fluorescent tubes or bulbs with lower intensity to reduce interior lighting. If possible try positioning your computer screen beside the windows, instead of behind or in front of them.

Glare Reduction

Eye strain could occur if you're working in an area where there's light shining off finished surfaces, walls, or reflections occurring off your computer screen. If possible, consider painting the walls in your office a darker color with a matte finish. Then, install an anti-glare screen. Use an anti-reflective coating on your glasses if you wear them.

Blinking

Blinking often when you're working with a computer helps keep your eyes moist. The more you're blinking, the less dryness and irritation will occur. If you're staring at the screen, you may find that you're blinking less often. It isn't uncommon for those who are working at their computer to blink with partial lid closure. Therefore, dry eyes occur. You can help prevent dry and irritated eyes from happening by blinking ten times every twenty minutes. More Information
