What to Expect from Your First Contact Lens Exam

Your First Contact Lens Exam

Thinking about making the move to contacts but not sure what to expect? Our team at Progressive Eyecare & Eyewear shares this quick guide to prepare you for your first contact lens fitting.

Before Contact Lens Exams

It’s essential to have a comprehensive exam with your eye doctor first. This exam is very different than the contact exam, as it checks the overall health of your eyes and vision. Your optometrist will also determine during this exam whether there is anything that might interfere with your ability to wear contacts.

What Does the First Contact Lens Exam Include?

After you’ve had your regular eye exam, you can schedule your contact lens exam, which will include the following.

Consultation

Your appointment will begin with a discussion, which will include anything about your health or lifestyle that might help your optometrist provide the best contact lens recommendations. For example, soft lenses might be better for you than rigid gas-permeable ones. You will also discuss options like daily versus monthly wear and colored contact lenses.

Measurements

If your contacts don’t fit your eyes properly, they won’t help you see well. In fact, they will typically make your vision blurrier and might be uncomfortable or damage your eye. To prevent this, your optometrist will measure your corneal curvature and iris or pupil size. We will also measure how well you produce tears to ensure your eyes won’t be dry with the contacts.

Trial

You will typically wear a trial pair of contact lenses for up to 20 minutes to ensure everything fits properly. If there are no issues with the fit or anything else, your lenses will be ordered.

Guidance and Scheduling

When your lenses arrive, you will go in to pick them up. At this time, your eye doctor will walk you through how to care for both your contacts and your eyes. You will also schedule a follow-up visit to make sure everything is working well.
